The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium® offers something not every specialty education meeting does — reasons to stay until the very end. The Year in Review and View from the Trenches sessions on Friday afternoon and evening, December 13, will wrap up developments from the 2024 SABCS® and set the stage for discussions in the weeks and months to come.
SABCS Co-Directors Virginia Kaklamani, MD, and Carlos Arteaga, MD, will lead the Year in Review from 3 – 5 p.m. CT on Friday in the Stars at Night Ballroom 1-2 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. An expert panel will distill paradigm-shifting breast cancer research published during the past year into four easily digestible presentations.
Neil Vasan, MD, PhD, of Columbia University, will summarize key advances in basic science. Pedram Razavi, MD, PhD, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, will review developments in translational science. Janice Tsang, MBBS, MRCP, FRCP, of the University of Hong Kong, will highlight important updates in early breast cancer. And Michael Danso, MD, of Virginia Oncology Associates, will focus on progress in advanced breast cancer.
“The Year in Review is great because it’s a nice, short summary of what the year brought for breast cancer research and care. It’s a great way to start the new year,” said longtime attendee Nadia Harbeck, MD, PhD, of LMU University Hospital in Munich, Germany.
A 30-minute reception break will follow, from 5 – 5:30 p.m., before the start of another highly anticipated session.
View from the Trenches, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in Stars at Night Ballroom 1-2, will summarize key clinical findings from this year’s SABCS® that attendees can put into immediate practice upon their return home.
Joyce O’Shaughnessy, MD, of Baylor Scott & White Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, will moderate a panel discussion with five other experts. Cristina Saura, MD, PhD, of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology, and Antonio Wolff, MD, of Johns Hopkins Medicine, will address the impact on medical oncology; Atif Khan, MD, MS, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, will discuss radiation oncology; Alastair Thompson, MD, MBChB, of Baylor College of Medicine, will look at the context of surgical oncology; and patient advocate Stacey Tinianov, of Santa Cruz, California, will offer her perspective on the week’s presentations.
SABCS® Program Planning Committee member and patient advocate Thelma Brown, BSc, of Birmingham, Alabama, said she looks forward to attending the View from the Trenches session every year because it offers an ideal conclusion to the preceding four days of groundbreaking research and innovative poster presentations.
“Panelists from this session expertly sum up the immediate clinical implications of the latest SABCS® findings, as well as any potential paradigm-shifting therapies in the pipeline,” she said.
This year’s View from the Trenches session will also include the conclusion of the first-ever SABCS® Duck Pluck, a fundraiser supporting early-career scientists. Attendees who purchased a duck earlier in the week can watch as 10 winners are plucked at random for exciting prizes, including free registration and hotel stay for the 2025 SABCS®.
